Introduction

Sulawesi is a learges island in the biogeographical sub region of Wallacea, the biological transition zone between Asian and Australian plants and animals. Due to its size, geological history, and geographic isolation, Sulawesi’s species endemism is spectacularly high.


Sulawesi Biodiversity facts
  • ·         Sulawesi is one the most important Endemic Bird Areas (EBA) in Sulawesi : of the 328 birds species, 89 (27%) are unique.
  • ·         Of the 127 mammals species, 79 (27%) are endemic, and endemism riset to 98% if non-flaying mammals are excluded.
  • ·         29 of the 104 reptiles species (28%) are endemic to Sulawesi.


North Sulawesi Biodiversity Facts
  • ·         North Sulawesi supports 89 of the 103 Sulawesi endemic bird species (including offshore islands).
  • ·         Of these 89 species, 13 are endemic to North Sulawesi.
  • ·         North Sulawesi contains 20 of the 24 species of fruits bats occurring in Sulawesi.
  • ·         North Sulawesi contains 4 of the 8 species of shrews occurring in Sulawesi.
  • ·         North Sulawesi contains 17 of the 38 indigenous species of rats and moce.
  • The forest of Sulawesi can be broadly described as tropical evergreen forest that includes a range of vegetation types that are mostly restricted to the lowlands below 1000m.
